Celebrity Money-making machine?

X-Factor winners ‘Little Mix’ released a statement this week claiming that their career was based purely upon the music they make.

This came in the same week that they released their false nail range:

It makes you think - what is the value of musicians nowadays? And are they simply a figure head of a money-making machine who’s music is secondary to their ranges of perfumes, tv shows and even clothing lines?

Something to think about on a Wednesday!!

Official Chart vs Downloads

With Pj and Duncan returning to the charts nearly 20 years after their single was released I can’t help but think about the influence the ‘Download Chart’ has upon British music.

It definitely is the most up-to-date and current ‘live’ chart and documents the success of a song as it happens, which makes me wonder if I trust/prefer the download chart as opposed to the Official Chart.

It seems in an age where information is only a ‘click away’ that the download chart could become the dominant force in the music industry…and to be honest…I don’t think I mind.

Festival Fever!

With the first sign of spring this weekend it got us thinking about the summer and the massive choice of festivals!

Obviously there are the classics like Glastonbury and Leeds/Reading Fest.

But then there are also some great looking newcomers such as the ‘Unknown’ festival in Croatia with headliners such as Jessie Ware and Disclosure!

It seems that festivals abroad are be coming more popular with the student market maybe due to the cost. low admission charges and cheap flights out of the UK make festivals abroad sometimes a cheaper experience than the UK ones.

Had enough of the Harlem Shake?

Its completely understandable! So are ‘The Midnight Beast’ and here is their response to the viral-track…

So if on this Sunday evening you fancy a little lighthearted comedy…check it out!!

Just saw this on the CR blog and thought it was awesome.  It’s a typographic timeline installed in Sony Music’s HQ in London, created by designer Alex Fowkes to capture the history of Sony Music from 1887-2012. Really nice blend of type and illustration.

Fred Flintstone Fashion

What’s happening to the world? That’s two outfits I’ve seen this month that are giving me signals Fred Flintstone has hit the catwalk… first up in Little Mix’s new video ‘Wings’ Leigh-Anne sports a bedrock top and now TOWIE Billi’s dress and tie combo on the red carpet for Keith Lemon’s film premier. Interesting choice - I’m not sure why, and I’m not sure who dared them, but hats off to them for still managing to look pretty good.

I’m not so sure I could pull it off… and I don’t think I’ll ever try!

Loved these posters for the Pedestrian Council of Australia, created to highlight the dangers of listening to music whilst trying to cross busy roads. Really creative :)

Love these new adverts Audi have produced to advertise their new Audi Sound Plus Audio System, particularly the guitar one!

Pushing all the right buttons

So this week will see a whole host of Radio 1 DJs and amazing new artists descending on Hull for the weekend finale to the new music month that’s been running throughout January on Radio 1 and 1xtra.

There are loads of free events, shows and DJ sets going on across the city (for full info: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/events/hull/ ) – and on Friday night it’s Pete Tong’s turn at City Hall, with an appearance from Madeon.

We discovered this guy this week after hearing Chris Moyles raving about him on his breakfast show and man does he know how to push some buttons!

Have a look at his video and check out his mad skills:

For those lucky people who got their mits on some tickets for Madeon’s gig, enjoy! We are well jel.

T-Mobile are back again with some experiential marketing for Christmas. This time, Mariah Carey performed for people around Europe but the unsuspecting crowd were unaware that she was in-fact a hologram until she vanished in a sparkly puff of smoke!

I wonder how much it would cost to get a Rihanna hologram installed in my flat?

Imagine a world without music…

What’s your favourite artist? What’s your favourite song? What’s your favourite genre of music? You can answer all of those questions, but there are no correct or wrong answers, the truth is, everyone likes at least one type of music! Whether it be rap, R&B, soul, or anything else you will all have your own reasons. Admit it, we’ve all had a moment when we’ve thought that a song has been written especially for how we feel, that every word and every lyric exactly describes that moment. It is bound to happen more than once because as people we share the same experiences and the same emotions; whether that being head over heels in love or feeling like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.

So imagine the world without music? Imagine the abnormality of it? There would be no ‘X-Factor’ no dance; no birds singing in the trees, the world would be in silence. Think of the times nothing can describe you better than a song, no one would find out, no one would be different. Music is a big part of youth life with the i-pods, MP3’s and You Tube, these things have become phenomenon’s, and there is no one I know that is without some type of musical background!
