It had been predicted in many different places, as the battle between powers such as Google and Facebook continued that the re-emergence of broadcast media was a strong possibility in 2012 as brands continue to fight for user engagement.
Broadcast media has been in the forefront previously with Apple launching their own personalised AppleTV service, which having experienced first-hand, is a pretty decent bit of technology!
Though social broadcast media can be strongly linked to programmes such as Facebook and Twitter, the latter which probably has social broadcast media down to a tee. Twitter (as does Facebook) goes into over drive during hit shows such as X-Factor and The Apprentice. The ease of tweeting whilst watching your favourite shows with all the technology available makes hearing from your friends, and their opinions so much easier.
Now enters Google, who are known for their competitive and sometime hostile battle with Facebook for market supremacy. Following apples angle at launching a paid TV service, Google have now followed up by filing for an application to provide video services to Kansas City, presumably a targeted trial run to assess the usability of a new market for Google.
If the application is successful, it is possible that they could start providing this service this week. It will be interesting to see how this new launch develops, and more importantly, how competitors will react to the results.
If successful, we could see a surge in the market of digital companies launching their own video services throughout the next twelve months, which can only benefit us, the users in the long term.
